Can You Get Braces a Second Time?
May 10, 2023
If you’re a teen or an adult, perhaps you’ve already worn braces. It wouldn’t be surprising – most wear the appliance at some point. That said, maybe your teeth are misaligned again. In that case, you might wonder, “Can I wear braces twice?” The answer to that question is simple: Yes! Indeed, it’s safe to go through a 2nd round of braces treatment. To learn why, let your New England dentist explain. Here’s a summary of why some people need braces more than once.
Why Would You Need a 2nd Round of Braces?
After wearing braces, you may think your smile will stay straight on its own. Unfortunately, that simply isn’t the case.
Once the orthodontist removes your braces, your teeth will try going back to crooked positions. For this reason, you typically wear a retainer as part of post-treatment. The latter appliance preserves the former one’s results.
Of course, many patients don’t follow instructions for retainer use. Instead, they skip or forget to wear the device. This lack of commitment, though, can make your smile return to its former, crooked self.
Is It Safe to Get Braces Again?
Usually, it’s quite safe to have a second braces treatment. Still, the orthodontist will need to see if you qualify for care.
First, the dental team will perform a standard oral exam. A healthy mouth, you see, is crucial for a successful braces treatment. If you suffer from tooth decay or gum disease, the dentist’s office must address those issues first.
Next, the orthodontist will take some dental X-rays. Orthodontic work can shorten tooth roots if done carelessly. Therefore, the X-rays will make sure there aren’t underlying issues.
How to Keep Your Smile Straight
Even if you wear braces a second time, it won’t mean much if the results don’t last. Once you finish this follow-up care, then, follow the tips below:
- Wear Your Retainer – Wear your retainer as instructed by the orthodontist. By doing so, the appliance will keep your teeth straight as long as you wear it.
- Avoid Bad Oral Habits – Some bad oral habits can cause your teeth to move. For example, common ones include nail-biting, tongue-thrusting, and teeth-grinding.
- Practice Good Oral Hygiene – Without good oral care, you may lose teeth from cavities or gum disease. Your other teeth will then drift and change your bite’s alignment.
Remember: The answer to “Can I wear braces twice?” is yes. Just use the tips above – they’ll keep you from needing a third time!
